Biography

Randwick RU five-eighth, a junior Australian Beach Sprint champion, had a phenomenal year in 1975 when he represented City, NSW and Australia against England. Lightly-framed, but with great hands and a deceptive sidestep, Wright toured NZ, England, America, Italy and France, playing in 9 Tests. In 1979 he changed codes to play with Easts. Despite being a naturally gifted player, Wright was more suited to a free-flowing rugby game than the rigours of rugby league. He played in Easts' 18-4 grand final loss to C’bury in 1980 before moving to Souths where, at one stage, he was a reserve for reserve grade before rescuing his reputation as a classy organiser.

Another of the many converts to League from Union - along with the luckless Brett Papworth, Tony Melrose, Peter Sullivan, John Ballesty, Phil Smith, Owen O'Donnell, etc - who failed to replicate their rugby achievements in the 13-a-side game.

Blessed with a great sidestep off the right foot.
