Brett was captain of the western suburbs jersy flegg side that won the competition in 1980. He captained the Australian school boys side from holy cross ryde. He was a local western suburbs junior playing for both Burwood United and Enfield Federals. An outstanding junior who was tough and uncomprising but he didn't really live up to his great talents when he entered grade.

Brett was the hardest player i had ever encountered , and he was on my own team !
We played against each other due to a bye from the other team. They had the sense not to turn up against the feds that consisted of names like Gale, Alchin and Kreiger.
He smashed us. So i could imagine how other teams suffered defeat.

Wests won the Jersey Flegg in 1981 but in the online stats they attribute the title to Balmain. Wests beat Balmain at Belmore oval in the semi final and went on to defeat South Sydney against all odds.

I remember that game amongst ourselves very well.
Brett Gale hit with a tackle that rattled my bones.
Nearly 50 years on and I can still remember getting attention from the medic.
