Biography

Easts halfback garnered almost every major individual award in the early 1980s except the personal satisfaction of a Test jersey. Hastings won the Rothmans Medal in 1981 and was voted Player of the Year by Rugby League Week in three consecutive years (1980-82) but was constantly overlooked for rep selection. A member of the Easts side that lost to Canterbury in the 1980 grand final, his sole appearance for NSW was as a reserve in 1983. Hastings was also runner-up in the 'Dally M' Player of the Year award in 1980-82 but was a shock omission from the 1982 Kangaroo Tour. He continued to be a standout performer for the Roosters in the week-to-week grind of Sydney club football but his career wound down after being sidelined for 10 months after breaking his arm during the 1985 season. The first Easts clubman to play 200 first grade games, Hastings was alternatively playing hooker and lock when he left the club in 1987 to coach on the Central Coast.

For Horrie it was hard for him to come into the representative light as he had to contest with the like/s of Tommy Raudonikos, Steve Mortimor and Peter Sterling. He was a true Clubman for The Roosters. Amazingly, He has never been asked by Easts/Sydney Roosters if he would be interested in some kind of coaching or training role at The Club. Some time ago I did get in touch with him by Linked-In to ask if Roosters made an offer what would he do. In his true hearted honesty he said that He would leave The USA tomorrow to have involvement with The Roosters.

Even in 2017 you see supporters wearing old Roosters Jerseys with number 7 - Kevin Hastings on the back.
Loyalty to the Roosters cost him a representative career, in hindsight he should have moved on to Manly with Boustead, Gurr and Cleal.
Still extremely fit, working as PT and won the "Toughest Competitor Alive" event in 2015

    Im in my 50s now.
But have been a roosters man since i was 13.
Keven hastings was a great player.
In his prime i couldnt pick who was a better half him or peter sterling. But both were better than steve mortimer.
I just wish he played in the same life as brad fittler .
These two in the halfs wouldve been great.

Having met him in his younger days found him to be a gentleman as well as a very talented football player. I can see where his son Jackson gets his talent and ability from. An unsung Rooster who should be recognised for his contribution to the Roosters and Rugby League.

Legend has it that Hastings was given the nickname Horrie by Bill O’Reilly. Hasting’s nickname at school was Harry kind of a play on his dad’s name Howard (HH) His old schoolmates would chant “Harry” from the Sports Ground Hill maybe that’s what O’Reilly misheard.
