Biography
Veteran forward played in 230 grade games for St George, winning premierships in all three grades (1974, 1976 & 1977). Stone was graded as a 17-year-old lock in 1974 and made his first grade debut the following year. Not spared the humiliating 38-0 defeat by Easts in the 1975 grand final, he later won a premiership in reserve grade in 1976 and was an important part of 'Bath's Babes' who won the title in 1977. A fierce competitor, Stone romped away to score the first try in the replay against P’matta and was part of a pack that punished their opponents with unchecked aggression. Stone later moved to prop and was a replacement forward in the inaugural State of Origin match in 1980. Stone’s career fluctuated between the grades in the mid-1980s and he took on a captain-coach position with Picton. Stone returned to the St George club in an administrative role before losing a courageous battle with cancer in 2005.

Stoney was always one of my favourite Dragons players as he had lots of aggression in defence but a good turn of speed when he was through a gap. Loved his partnership with John Jansen in the second row. Very loyal to the great Dragons and never looked like defecting unlike others.
