Biography
Wagga (Turvey Park) fullback played for Country in 1975-76 before signing with the Bulldogs. With a grounding in Australian Rules, Brentnall possessed a massive kick in general play but his early Sydney career was punctuated by injury. It took several seasons for him to produce his best with the 1980 season proving the turning point in his career. A strong player, safe under pressure and with a good turn of pace in attack, Brentnall broke into Test football that year with two Test appearances against NZ and capped a memorable season with the Bulldogs’ grand final win over Easts. It was Brentnall's towering punt that resulted in Steve Gearin's fabulous try in that match. While C’bury faltered in the early 1980s, Brentnall won the Rothmans Medal in 1982 before touring with the Kangaroos. After an injury-plagued year in 1983, he retired from football at age 26, taking up the position of RL development officer in the Riverina area. In 1998, Brentnall joined former team-mate Chris Anderson as assistant coach of the Melbourne Storm.

In an illustrious career which first came to prominence after playing in Country Firsts surprise 19-9 win over City Firsts in 1975. Brentnall was Canterbury's first ever Rothmans Medal winner in 1982. He also scored the first ever try in State of Origin match in 1980. Brentnall is also the only player to get a 10 in a losing side in Rugby League Week, which he got during Canterbury's 25-20 loss to Manly at Brookvale Oval in 1982. He also is still the only Canterbury player to ever get a 10 in Rugby League Week as well.
