Biography

Rated by his captain, Frank Hyde, as one of the best locks of the 1940s, Harry Taylor was the centre of a 'no-show' controversy prior to Norths' 1943 grand final match against Newtown. Taylor was secretly in transit to New Guinea to fight in the war but rumours swept the ground that he would go AWOL to play the match - that he had even been picked up outside the SCG by military police. This was not true - Taylor set the record straight in an interview with Sydney journalist Mike Coleman in 1990. A hastily reshuffled Norths side was thrashed in the grand final, 34-7, and while Taylor tried a brief comeback in 1946, injuries suffered during the war ended his career.
