Shane Day was a hooker he started off his career at Souths before being sided by western suburbs and played under don Parish. In those years at wests he fight for his position with john purcell a local junior.

Shane was the first hooker who played as a halfback in play the ball scenarios and other hookers followed that trend. Scrums were contested and hookers became easily exhausted in repeatedly striking for the ball. Shane was a natural tackler and consistently brought down much heavier opponents. He was unlucky in that when he joined his first club,Souths, the two hookers ahead of him were Elwyn Walters and George Piggins who both went on to play for Australia.

Shane was the instigator of hookers (when scrums were contested and hooking was a craft) playing as dummy half. For a smaller man his tackling was outstanding, great timing bringing larger players down.

shayne was a person outside the mould in the wests teams of the 70s. He was extremely smart and a skillful player. He revelled in the social side of footy in those years and still loves a good bun

Souths junior - Alexandria Rovers but left Souths to join Illawarra Wests because Elwyn Walters and George Piggins were the hookers ahead of him at Souths.
