Biography

Talented centre/forward's career was overshadowed by a 1975 controversy that had a long-reaching effect on the premiership that year. Liubinskas was used as an illegal replacement in the 7-all draw with C’bury and the Magpies were subsequently stripped of their point. (This led to an historic three-way play off for fifth place between Balmain, Wests and P’matta). While it was the Eels that won through to defeat C’bury in the minor semi-final, the sad irony was that it would have been Wests that held out-right fifth place if that point had not been deducted.

Mick Liubinskas was well ahead of his time. Big-I think !88cms-he was also fast. My recollection is that he sustained a bad knee injury which had a significant impact on what was developing into a stellar career.

Moved to Sydney at a very young age and first played junior rugby league with Liverpool City. Then moved with his family to Concord in his teens and played with Concord United from where he was graded by Western Suburbs.

His appearance in the second round clash against Canterbury. And the result and reasons for Wests losing a point should have been put in match notes.

I saw him score a try from the kick off at the old Sydney Sports Ground
