This player retired at 26 years of age due to a neck injury suffered in the first pre season game playing for St George in 1971. Warren Thompson finished third in the backs championshio final at Wentworth Park in 1968. First and second place were the Parramatta wingers David Irvine ( no relation to Ken irvine) and Arch Brown.

A memorable moment from August 2 1970 was when I saw Reg Hatton score a runaway try for Penrith in their 26-17 loss to St George. It stuck in my mind years later and when I was relating it to a mate Warren Thompson he couldn not believe it.

Warren said that he was the player chasing Reg all the way and said the roles were reversed when he scored for St George earlier the First half.

Warren stated that his wife Annette said when he got home after the game that when she was watching the 2nd half of the game with Ron Casey calling the game he said "Saints player should give up the chase as Hatton is a Pro runner". Jokes on you Ron, Warren was a Pro runner as well.
