Rothmans Medal
1968

Biography

Clever halfback, and a consistent goal-kicker, came to the Sharks from the Wentworthville club in Sydney's Second Division. Hughes did not miss a match during Cronulla's first two seasons but greater recognition came at the end of 1968 when he was named the inaugural winner of the Rothmans Medal for best and fairest player. (Hughes, who beat the legendary John Raper by a point to win the award, had just come off contract). The signing of Tommy Bishop in 1969 all but signalled the end of his career with the club and he returned to play with Wentworthville in the early 1970s.
