Biography

Toowoomba centre, originally from Western NSW, played for Queensland against NZ in 1959 before touring with the 1959-60 Kangaroos. Boden appeared in 13 matches on tour (no Tests) and was signed by P’matta on his return. He represented NSW in his first season in Sydney and partnered Reg Gasnier in three Tests against France. A nuggetty type and a sound defender, Boden was selected in Australia's World Cup squad in 1960 but although Australia’s campaign in France was unsuccessful, he played in a 'Rest of the World' team against Great Britain at the end of the series. He was P’matta captain-coach in 1961.

Ron Boden and I did our National Service Training at Wacol QLD in 1957. We became good mates and both took part in Battalion Sports. Bowie won his division in the boxing and every event that he entered on the athletics programme except the 100 yard sprint for which he broke 3 times and was disqualified. I won my division in boxing and was part of the winning five miles cross country run. Ron Boden was one of the best blokes and best athlete I have ever known. Does anybody know where he is today? Good luck Bowie where ever you are. Ron McDonald.

I first witnessed Ron Boden in a test against France at the SCG in 1960. I was on the esplanade in front of the old Sheridan stand and while Reg Gasnier was the accepted centre genius going into that match I saw a zig zagging cross field run by Ron Boden that still sits in the memory bank. Great footwork in attack and solid defender. The other standout from that match was the goal kicking of Andre Lacaze .
