Biography

A Junior Kiwi rep while playing for the Randwick club in NZ Tony Kemp played with English club Doncaster in 1986-87 and 1989-90. The talented centre (who was equally adept in a number of backline positions) had to take the NZRL to court in order to join Newcastle in 1989. NZ officials continued to block Kemp's move, which delayed his start to the season to the end of April, but his aggressive running style and large frame made him a valuable player with the Knights over the following six seasons. His last hurrah with Newcastle was as the club's try-scorer in the 5-4 loss to Norths in the 1993 reserve grade grand final before joining English club Castleford. After two seasons with Castleford (1993-94 & 1994-95) Kemp moved to Leeds (1995-98) and then Wakefield Trinity (1999-2000). A veteran of 25 Tests Kemp took over from David Anderson as Warriors’ coach during the club’s tumultuous 2004 season. In 2005 he was replaced by former clubman Ivan Cleary.
